@princechromey @pinkteddyx64

A place to talk about all things F1 :D

The Belgian Grand Prix is the next Grand Prix, this weekend. Here is a guide to the track:

https://youtu.be/jrRQgO1g9Bs

I remember watching the 2012 Belgian Grand Prix where there was an absolutely massive crash at the first corner (note that Maldonado who jumped the start crashed out of the race in the next lap or a few laps later)

Thanks for the info. I knew this was on and shall definitely be watching this! :yep:

Wasn't 2012 the year when Fernando Alonso crashed into the back of Lewis Hamilton? Or was that another year/another circuit?

I don't remember any Alonso crashing into Hamilton. It definitely wasn't Belgium in 2012!

Must have been someone else then, I know there was a first corner crash in 2012

Both Hamilton and Alonso were involved in this crash, but it wasn't Alonso into Hamilton...

Grosjean's rear right wheel collided with Hamilyon's front left wheel, and while attempting to regain control, Hamilton crashed into the back oh Grosjean. Grosjean then went over Alonso's car (very close to his head), and a few other cars got tangled up too (if I remember correctly Kobayashi was involved...)

Crikey, that don't look good...

Something I don't like is the penalty system that they use for using too many engine parts/gearbox etc. Just think about Stoffel Vandoorne. He ended up with 65 places of grid penalty. This is just insane - that's more than 3x the amount of cars that start on the grid, for fuck sake....

Agreed. The penalty system can get a little ridiculous.

I saw it all. Knew it would be an epic bloodbath for McLaren Honda due to sectors 1 and 3.
The only reason why Alonso stood a chance in qualifying was due to using both McLarens to generate a tow, to help each other. In the race, nothing like this could happen, so the McLarens went backwards whilst everyone else went forwards.

McLaren seriously need to ditch Honda as their engine supplier for 2018.

And they are (apparently)

McLaren will get Mercedes engines while Sauber will get Honda

Then Sauber will be slipping backwards instead (not that they're doing any good at the moment!).

Sainz is moving from Torro Rosso to Renault.

Torro Rosso are getting Honda engines, swapping with McLaren, who will get Renault engines.

Nobahiru Matsuhita will be a Torro Rosso driver (practice driver at first) and Gasly will also race for Torro Rosso. Jolyon Palmer will not be racing next year

Source: some guy on Reddit who posted this:

Sainz goes to renault in exchange for toro rosso to be released from their engine contract with renault. toro rosso will get honda engines and mclaren will get the renault engines.
honda wants to place Nobuharu Matsuhita in a toro rosso (first only as a practice driver). Gasly will take toro rosso's second seat. Palmer is out.

Hmm, interesting stuff. I'm surprised that any team is using the Honda power unit, because it always struggles with tracks that have lots of long straights.

Also surprising that Sainz is seemingly going to another team - I'd have thought that Kyvat was leaving Torro Rosso, considering the amount of incidents he tends to cause!

In a way, it's a smart move by Red Bull (who own Torro Rosso) Since if the Honda engine has improved next season, they can use it on the Red Bull cars in 2019. And if it fails, it's only their second team. And with VW entering Formula One in 2021, they could have a deal with them too, so for the 2021 and 2022 seasons they'd have a choice of three engine manufacturers (Renault, Honda, and VW)!

So Torro Rosso (Red Bull's second team) has changed to Honda engines for 2018, while Red Bull will keep Renault engines. Renault will not supply Red Bull's engines for 2019 though, so Red Bull will be using Honda engines in 2019.

They'd be better off using either Mercedes power (like Williams) or Ferrari power (I know one of the other teams uses Ferrari power units, Sauber perhaps?). If they use Honda power then expect them to slip down the rankings very quickly :(

Honda have been poor (certainly in regards to straight line speed) ever since F1 went with the hybrid engines, with the energy recovery system, so I highly doubt they will improve...
Just remember back to Spa 2017. Sector 2 was fine for the Honda's, however Sectors 1 and 3, with long straights, were very poor indeed, with the qualifying only being as good as it was because one of the McLaren drivers gave the other one a tow up the straights, to try and close the deficit. Of course, that couldn't happen in the race, so the McLaren Honda's slipped backwards.
